I have been
Sheena MacDougall-Scotland volunteering at
Suncokret for nearly a month. I have previously volunteered in Gutemalla
in Central America for 2 months, in 2007, doing workshops with the youth
there and at a summer camp in Morocco for 1 month before traveling to
Croatia.
I enjoy volunteering because you get to know the
community, you meet new people and learn new things, and it’s easier to
understand the culture of the country by actually living in it rather
than visiting it as a tourist.
I came to Gvozd with Lorraine from Ireland. while
Lorraine left after two weeks for another volunteering project, I
decided to stay, because I loved it so much. I am from Scotland and have
been given the nickname Sheena Masheena.
I think the work and dedication of
the staff and volunteers that support and run Suncokret operate as a
very professional team. The centre is a wonderful open and friendly
space that develops organically to the social and educational needs and
desires of the children, young people and whole community of the small
town of Gvozd and surrounding area. I have thoroughly enjoyed my weeks
working with the project and wish Suncorkret all the success for the
future.
