Suncokret Centre for Community Development is conducting an Erasmus+ youth exchange project „Sunflower Power“, financed by the Agency for Mobility and EU Programmes.
In mid-February 2017, Suncokret Centre for Community Development started the ten-month long implementation of „Sunflower Power“, which is an Erasmus+ youth exchange project. The main activity was held in Vrginmost in the period of 27th April – 6th May 2017. The project idea was developed by four international partner organizations: ASK Yourself (Romania), Belen Kaymakamlığı (Turkey), Connect (Italy) and Razvojna agencija Kozjansko (Slovenia). Each partner organization is represented by 5 participants, and a total of 25 youth from 5 different countries are taking part in the implementation of this project.
The main aims of this youth exchange project are to raise awareness on the importance of daily recycling and environmentally conscious actions, and to promote a sustainable way of living. In order to accomplish these goals, during the youth exchange activity we implemented workshops and activities based on nonformal and informal learning methods. That way, we focused on learning by doing, intercultural sharing and dialogue, creative expression and knowledge exchange among 25 participants of this project, what made them more ready to share their new experiences to people back in their communities. Some of the implemented activities during the eight day acitivity in Vrginmost were: waste recycling and composting, debates on the topic of sustainability, tree planting, visit to the Petrova gora mountain and aquarium in Karlovac, public speech workshop, creating entrepreneurial ideas for local people in Vrginmost, recycling workshops and treasure hunt with local youth and children, etc.
After the eight day activity in Vrginmost, participants continued to be active and they are currently sharing the „Sunflower Power“ project results with partner organizations and helping them with promotion of these activities. Some of the already implemented activities were: promoting the project and Erasmus+ programme on social media, holding presentations at their universities, posters creation, writing articles about the project experience, planting and growing their own garden, etc. Other than contributing to everyday sustainability, we believe this project led to valuable results at the local community levels in the five partner countries. Results of the evaluations implemented at the end of the „Sunflower Power“ exchange activity also showed that this project successfully assisted the youth in developing the key competences necessary for active involvement in their society.
Two of our participants wrote their impressions of the project. Firstly we bring the one written by Dejan B. from the Croatian team:
Here is a short review of our project from a person who, according to others, is not that good with words….Well, in the end I would say they aren’t wrong.
First of all, I am forever grateful to the person who quited from participating on this project few days before it started because it opened space for me. These 9 days I spent with other 24 most amazing people coming from Romania, Turkey, Italy, Slovenia and Croatia will forever be remembered in my mind. We worked, we smiled, we yelled at each other, we learned, we cleaned, we (enter what ever you want)…. and we did it all together and we did it with positive energy. One of the most important parts of the whole project was that we were able to share our ideas and thoughts with the local population. So for instance, I really enjoyed working with kids at Sunflower Center and teaching them about recycling waste. Another very instructive point was presenting our ideas to locals about improving local community. Personally, I believe that our suggestions are very constructive and with some effort they can become reallity.
For the end, I would just say thanks Vrginmost and Sunflower Center for being such a wonderful host for all of us and I really hope that some day we will meet again.
After the words from Dejan, we are bringing the ones written by Mehmet M. from the Turkish team.
I don’t even know where to start when describing such an exciting project, but I will do my best. Actually, this whole adventure started when I met Luka in the previous project. Our friendship that flourished during the previous project got even stronger when we met again in Croatia. I can easily write tens of pages just to explain how fortunate I was to see my friends Luka, Luca and Doko again. I realized something very precious when I come together with my friends, that is, during these projects you don’t only make friendships that last for a week, but you make amazing friends who will put a big smile in your face whenever you see them again. Meeting people from very different cultures, spending days with them to form memorable experiences is a great thing. But even better thing is knowing that you will see your new friends again in the future and this project was just the beginning of great friendships. You know that, because immediately after the project ends, you start to put an effort to see your new friends again and you plan for new trips or projects with them. This is what I am doing right now, because I really want to see everyone in the project again and learn more about their cultures in their country. I hope, I will be able to do that.
Now it is time to describe our project in detail. I can actually describe this project with only three words: knowledge, fun and friendship. But I feel like such an exciting project deserves a more detailed description, since it was the best project ever I have attended in my life. So, I will go deeper on this one. When I landed on Zagreb for the project, I could never imagine that 10 days would pass so quickly. Firstly, I met with the other members of the Turkish team and at that moment I realized how much fun this project was going to be. Then, we gathered in the bus station and started our little trip towards Gvozd, this is how the amazing adventure started for me. It is really difficult to describe all the positive experiences I had from the time I got into the Gvozd bus, till the time I arrived at Zagreb Airport for returning to Turkey. I have learned many important lessons during the project: how we can minimize our damage to the environment, how we can make our Earth a more livable planet, how to be a part of a team, how to face your fears of speaking in front of the public, how to take responsibility, how to be an entrepreneur in natural cosmetics, and how to live as part of the nature with the help of eco-gardening. All these things I learned significantly improved me as a person and changed my worldview in environmental issues. Now, I am more conscious about the environmental issues and I started to change my lifestyle to a more environment friendly lifestyle. Also, there is one more thing I would like to specifically mention. Maybe the best thing this project gave me was the skills to face my fears. I had a fear about my English before the project. My English was not that good and I was constantly thinking about how I will communicate with other people in the project. However, after arriving at the project, I realized that this was not a thing to be afraid of, because everyone in the project tried to genuinely understand me and communicate with me, no matter how many errors I made when speaking in English. In short, my project friends helped me to face this English fear of mine and I would like to thank all of them for this, for their great friendships and for our beautiful memories. This was an unforgettable project for me and whenever I look to our group pictures, I realize how much I missed every one of my friends. I am hoping that I will be able to come together with them again very soon.
Finally, I would like to thank to Belen District Governorship, who sponsored me to join this project and I would like to thank to Suncokret which organizing this amazing project, helped me to meet many new friends, share unforgettable memories with them and learn about the cultures of their countries including Italy, Romania, Slovenia, and Croatia.
